Your Guide to EV Maintenance

When you think of EVs, a futuristic set of wheels comes to mind - one that requires little maintenance and offers a new world of electrified driving.

In many ways, EVs are cost-effective in their maintenance. Since they have fewer components than their conventionally powered counterparts, EVs are simpler to keep in tip-top shape.

If you’re wondering how what goes into being an EV owner, you’ve come to the right place! From maximizing battery life to mileage-based service, this is your guide to EV maintenance.

Get the Most Out of Your EV Battery Lifespan

Instead of oil changes and engine repairs, EVs have a simplified battery system that requires little maintenance from technicians. The batteries found inside an EV are like the ones found inside our laptop and smartphones, just bigger.

In most cases, these lithium-ion EV batteries can last between 10 and 20 years. Though their lifespan on average is long, issues can arise that can affect your battery health if you don’t take proper precautions.

For starters, try to avoid extreme temperature changes. If your EV is sunbathing in the summer, the extreme heat can cause battery drain. You can remedy this by parking in the shade or plugging in your EV while parked, so it doesn’t lose battery power.

Same goes for freezing cold temperatures. Charging your EV outside during harsh winters can shorten its lifespan and damage it. If your EV has been parked outside in extreme cold, try going for a spin around the block first to warm up before charging.

If you’re an aspiring EV owner, make sure you talk to your dealership about an EV battery warranty. This way, you can drive with peace of mind knowing you have protection in the case of a battery repair.

Stay Current with Your Software

You know updating your computer or phone is necessary, but EVs also require routine software updates. An EV is a high-tech machine, and software updates keep your data secured while running smoothly.

If you tend to delay these updates, it may cause some slowness in your interface or even app crashes. In addition to staying current with your software, opt for a service agreement that can battle against cyber-attacks and covers ID theft recovery.

If hacking occurs, go to your trusted dealership and have them reset your EV back to factory settings. This way, you get your data secured again.

Maintenance by the Miles

EVs don’t require oil changes or engine tune-ups, but it’s still important to get your ride checked every few thousand miles. Like a traditional vehicle, it’s important to get your wheels aligned and inflated every six months to ensure that you can drive safely.

Additionally, EVs still use brake fluid and coolant, so make sure to get these topped off and addressed according to your manufacturer recommendations. Miles vary depending on your EV model, so your owner’s manual is a handy tool that can inform you of when it’s time for a check.
